Volunteer Programs

As an ESL Conversation Partner, you will be matched with an individual, and meet with them in-person for English conversation practice. You can meet with the client in their home, at a coffee shop, or even virtually through a video chat. ESL Conversation Partners have the opportunity to build relationships with new refugee families, and help them integrate into Indianapolis by practicing their English, and giving them confidence for their daily conversations. RIS will provide books and suggestions for you to use, or you can bring your own ideas and curriculum. This is not a formal class, but a space for conversation practice and friendship.

As a Move Crew Volunteer, you will have the opportunity to  help with apartment set-up projects. The dates for these projects vary, as the team sets up for families arriving that same night, or the following day. Our team is grateful for volunteers to help out! To find the nearest apartment set-up, look at the weekly calendar for times and addresses, to find one that suits you well. For this role, it is physically demanding, i.e., moving items and furniture, making beds, setting up kitchens, etc. Simply sign up for the opportunity on the calendar, and join the crew at the address!

Are you interested in Teaching English in a classroom setting? Or assisting an English teacher in a classroom? You can volunteer to join our ESL groups, as a teacher or an assistant. We can provide you with curriculum training and resources to grow as an English teacher, and share your native language with newcomers. For more information about English teaching, reach out to Jana at jbucher@archindy.org, and check the weekly calendar for ESL assistant opportunities!
